Iliyan Iliev, MD was born in 1988 in Sandanski, Bulgaria. After finishing elementary school in his native town, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Sofia.

In 2014 Dr. Iliev graduated from the Medical Faculty of St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.

During his residency training in general and visceral surgery (2015-2021), he worked in Austria at the Hospital of the German Order (Friesach, Carinthia) and Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen-Steyr Hospital (Steyr, Upper Austria).

Upon completion of the residency programme on June 1st, 2021, he continued working at Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen-Steyr Hospital until December 1st, when he moved to St. John of God’s Hospital in Vienna.

Dr. Iliev is particularly interested and engaged in the field of chronic wounds (incl. negative pressure wound treatment), abdominal wall hernias, vascular and laparoscopic surgery, upper and lower gastro-intestinal tract endoscopy, the use of ultrasound in surgical emergencies, etc.

He is an active member of numerous surgical, oncologic, radiological, and endoscopic medical associations, such as the Austrian (OEGCH) and German Society of General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV), the European (ESSO) and Austrian Society of Surgical Oncology (ACCO-ASSO), the European Hernia Society (EHS), European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), the German (DGfW) and Austrian Wound Association (AWA), the Austrian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (ÖGUM), etc.

Dr. Iliev is a lead or co-author of a variety of articles in international and Bulgarian medical journals – American Journal of Case Reports, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open, MD Magazine, etc. For the first time in Bulgaria, he published a complete description of the characteristics and treatment of the colonic diverticular disease (2019), Cameron lesions (2021), use of hydromorphone in patients with chronic pain (2020/2022), and the most extensively used vacuum dressings (2023). In St. John of God’s Hospital, he presided over a team of specialists who developed and published a novel technique for the placement of vacuum dressings in patients with sensitive/allergic skin (2023). Dr. Iliev takes part in different clinical trials investigating innovative treatment approaches in visceral surgery.
